Bars along the Lower East Side have added daytime service and lower-alcohol options this July as foot traffic patterns changed after new office-return mandates took effect.

The shift matters now because rising commercial rents and altered commuter flows have forced operators to rethink who visits and when, rather than relying on the same evening crowds that defined the area five years ago.

Lower East Side adjustments

Attaboy on Orchard Street extended its opening time to 3 p.m. on weekdays starting June 15 and introduced a $12 sherry-based spritz to draw nearby workers from the Essex Crossing development. Two blocks away on Norfolk Street, Bar Goto added a Wednesday afternoon happy hour priced at $9 for select drinks, responding to foot traffic data collected by the Lower East Side Partnership that showed a 22 percent increase in daytime visitors since March.

Across the East River, spots in Williamsburg have followed a similar pattern. Maison Premiere on Bedford Avenue began hosting monthly industry nights on the first Tuesday of each month in 2026, featuring $14 oyster pairings aimed at service workers from nearby hotels rather than the weekend tourist groups that dominated before 2024.

Numbers behind the changes

The New York State Liquor Authority recorded 2,487 active bar licenses in Manhattan and Brooklyn as of May 2026, an increase of 187 from the same month in 2024, according to filings reviewed by the NYC Hospitality Alliance. Average cocktail prices at these venues reached $19, up $3 from 2023 levels, while non-alcoholic drink sales rose 31 percent year-over-year at the same locations.

Operators planning visits this month should check weekday hours online before heading out, since several venues now close earlier on Sundays to cut labor costs amid higher minimum-wage rules that took effect in January. Reservations remain essential at Attaboy and Maison Premiere on weekends, with tables booking out two weeks ahead for prime evening slots.
