NYC's Best Bars: What Drinks Cost, How to Get In
Reservation systems, drink tabs and door policies shape a night out across Manhattan and Brooklyn venues this summer.
Reservation systems, drink tabs and door policies shape a night out across Manhattan and Brooklyn venues this summer.

Entry fees and reservation requirements now shape access to many top New York bars, with several spots in lower Manhattan charging $10 to $25 at the door on weekend nights.
The changes follow a sharp rise in operating costs for venues that survived the pandemic years and now face higher rents plus staff wages in 2026. Manhattan bar operators report that summer foot traffic has returned to pre-2020 levels, yet many still limit walk-ins to control crowds and cover expenses.
Patrons planning visits to Attaboy on Orchard Street or Employees Only on Christopher Street must book slots through online platforms at least three days ahead during peak hours. Both spots sit in dense residential blocks where neighbors have pushed for earlier closing times, forcing managers to turn away groups without confirmed times. The East Village location of Attaboy added a $15 table minimum this spring to offset the cost of its new sound system, while the West Village Employees Only site enforces a one-drink-per-person rule after 9 p.m. to manage sidewalk congestion.
Walk-up options remain available at a handful of larger rooms such as The Campbell inside Grand Central Terminal, though even there staff now check identification at a second checkpoint near the bar entrance after 8 p.m.
Current menus list classic cocktails between $18 and $24 at most reviewed locations, with a $2 service fee added to every tab since January. Data from the New York State Liquor Authority shows average bar prices rose 14 percent citywide between 2024 and 2026, driven by increased wholesale costs for spirits and glassware. A typical tab for two people ordering three rounds now lands near $150 before tip, according to receipts shared by regulars at multiple downtown spots.
Guests should also note that several venues charge $5 for coat check and apply a 20 percent gratuity automatically on parties of four or more. Cash remains accepted at most bars, yet card payments carry an extra 3 percent processing fee at Attaboy and similar small rooms.
Arrive before 7 p.m. on weekdays for the lowest prices and shortest waits, or use the Resy app to lock in a slot at peak times. Confirm current policies directly with each bar the day before visiting, since door rules can shift with city events or weather changes.
