New York City workers logged 2.4 million calls to the NYC Well hotline in the first half of 2026, with workplace stress listed as the top reason.

The spike follows the state’s updated paid family leave rules that took effect in January. Those rules let employees take up to 12 weeks off for mental health treatment without losing their jobs. Many Manhattan firms still fail to post the required notices in break rooms, leaving staff unsure of their options.

Legal rights on the job

New York State law now requires employers with five or more staff to provide reasonable accommodations for anxiety or depression. The rule covers schedule changes and remote work requests. Workers along the Hudson River Park corridor have used the provision to shift start times and avoid rush-hour subway crowds that worsen panic attacks.

Employees at firms near Central Park South can also request unpaid leave under the city’s expanded sick leave ordinance. The ordinance covers therapy appointments and caps at 40 hours per year. Human resources departments must respond to requests within five business days or face fines up to $500 per violation.

Local programs that deliver results

The Mount Sinai Hospital employee assistance program on East 98th Street offers free eight-week stress management classes every Tuesday evening. Participants learn breathing techniques and receive follow-up calls from licensed counselors. The program served 1,872 city workers last quarter.

Further downtown, the Hudson River Park Trust runs a free Friday morning running group that starts at Pier 26. The sessions pair physical activity with brief talks on burnout prevention. Registration happens through the trust’s website and spots fill within 48 hours.

City data from the Department of Labor shows that workers who use at least one of these resources report a 31 percent drop in self-rated stress scores after eight weeks. The figure comes from a March 2026 survey of 4,500 participants across five boroughs.

Staff who want to start today can call NYC Well at 888-NYC-WELL or visit the Mount Sinai program intake desk before 5 p.m. on weekdays. Both options require only a name and work email to begin.
