Brooklyn Heights: New York's Most Beautiful Promenade

Brooklyn Heights is New York City's first designated historic district and its most architecturally coherent neighbourhood — a grid of Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate brownstones from the 1820s through 1880s that gives the streets above the Brooklyn waterfront the appearance of an intact 19th-century city. The neighbourhood sits on a bluff overlooking the East River and Lower Manhattan, and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade — a 0.4-mile elevated walkway cantilevered above the BQE expressway — delivers what is widely considered the finest urban panorama in the United States: the Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, and New York Harbor all visible from a pedestrian esplanade that catches river breezes and golden light throughout the day.

The streets of the Heights themselves reward slow walking — Pierrepont Street, Montague Street, and the surrounding blocks are lined with meticulously maintained Federal-style townhouses and Greek Revival mansions representing some of the finest domestic architecture in America. Dozens of 19th-century buildings survive in essentially original condition, and the neighbourhood's protected status has prevented the demolition and infill that erased equivalent blocks elsewhere in the city.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park immediately below the promenade runs from Atlantic Avenue south to Red Hook, its piers converted into ball fields, a picnic grove, kayak rental, and a seasonal outdoor pool with harbor views. Montague Street is the neighbourhood's commercial spine — a mix of local restaurants, cafes, and independent retail that serves the surrounding residential community. The Heights is most beautiful at dusk on a clear day when the Manhattan skyline catches the last light across the water and the Promenade fills with residents and visitors sharing what may be the best free view in New York.
